John Henry Junior Bowden, 84, passed away November 18, 2018 in Grandfalls, Texas. He was born on May 10, 1934 to John and Jewel Bowden in Harold, Texas. Junior married the love of his life Barbara Crouch in 1954 and had two sons.
Junior grew up on a farm near the Red River and attended Oklaunion High School where he was apart of the graduating class of 1951. After graduation he attended Cisco Junior College on a football scholarship. Junior worked for Bentley Construction, then for Payton Waterflood then purchased Freeman Welding in 1959. He was an active and supporting member of the community from serving as a member on many boards such as City Council, Grandfalls Housing Authority Board, Grandfalls-Royalty School Board from 1974 to 1997, Ward County Livestock Board also serving in the capacity of President and Ring Steward for Livestock show, Upper Pecos County Soil, and the Water Conservation Board, to being a part of the Grandfalls Volunteer Fire Department and EMS from 1955 to 1980. Junior received awards from the Grandfalls-Royalty School Board, Grandfalls-Royalty FFA, and Citizen of The Year award in 1978 these are some of the many award that we presented to him for his dedication and hard work he put in for the community.
The Masonic Lodge holds a special place in Junior's life. He became a member of the Grandfalls Lodge No. 895 and was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason on November 7, 1957. During his time as Mason he held many offices such as; Junior Warden to Senior Warden then to Worshipful Master of the Lodge where he spent the year 1962 to 1963 in that office. He was the Secretary for the Grandfalls Lodge No. 895 for many years.
Junior is preceded in death by his parents; John and Jewel Bowden, one son; Jon Bowden, and one grandson; Lance Bowden.
He is survived by his loving wife; Barbara Bowden, one son; Cy Bowden, four grandchildren; Chris Bowden, Douglas Bowden, Melody Sanchez and husband Dominic, Dallas Bowden, six great grandchildren; Stephanie, BreLynn, Kamron, Lillyanna, Gracyn, Esmie, and numerous friends.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at Harkey Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the Union Church in Grandfalls, Texas with Jared Secret officiating. Burial will follow at Tamarisk Cemetery in Grandfalls, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Doug Bowden, Dallas Bowden, Christopher Bowden, Dominic Sanchez, Jason Phillips, and Jon Phillips.
