Horace Seborn (H.S.) Calahan, Jr., age 91 years and 60 days of Monahans, TX passed away on December 9, 2016 in Monahans, TX.
H. S. was born at home in Floyd County, TX to H.S. Calahan, Sr. and Lala Delilah Shelby Calahan on October 10, 1925.
H.S. attended South Plains Elementary School, attended and graduated from Floydada High School, Floydada, TX. He attended Wayland Baptist University, Plainview, TX, and he attended and graduated from Hardin Simmons University, Abilene, TX with a BS in religion. He also attended and graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX with a Master in Divinity Degree.
H.S. married Mable June Foster on August 24, 1948 at First Baptist Church in Floydada, TX. They celebrated 68 years of loving marriage on August 24, 2016.
H.S. grew up on the farm and began farming with his Dad at a very young age. His farming career was interrupted by his service with the Merchant Marines during World War II. In 1963, he surrendered to preach and began the first African American Baptist Mission in South Plains, TX. Six months later he was called to Northfield Baptist Church in Motley County, TX. In the summer of 1964, he retired from farming and the family moved to Abilene, TX so he could finish his college degree at Hardin Simmons Univ. In March of 1965, he was called to Potosi Baptist Church in Abilene, TX. After graduation, the family moved to Burleson, TX where he was called to Calvary Baptist Church and continued his education at Southwestern Seminary. He graduated from the seminary in June, 1971. In the fall of 1971, he was called to Grand Avenue Baptist Church, Amarillo, TX. In the fall of 1972, he had the opportunity to join the Dub Jackson Crusade Japan and Korea. At this time, he had the opportunity to see hundreds won to Christ. He was also able to teach Bible at Amarillo Jr. College. After being called to Fairmont Park Baptist Church in La Porte, TX in the Spring, 1974, he had the privilege of teaching Bible at San Jacinto Jr. College in Pasadena, TX. After being appointed to the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, their orientation was at Callaway Gardens in Georgia. The couple was appointed to teach at the newly formed seminary in Liberia, West Africa. Six months later there was an uprising and President Talbert was assassinated. The newly uprising government closed a great amount of the work which limited the need for the missionaries. After returning to the USA, he was called to Immanuel Baptist Church in Abilene, TX. After several years, he retired from the pastorate and served as Minister to Senior Adults at First Baptist Church, Abilene, TX.
H.S. was Master Mason of the Masonic Lodge in Floydada, TX. He was awarded the Red Cap by the Abilene Lodge. He was a member and Chaplain of the Lions Club in Abilene. He was also a Chaplain and Trustee of Hendricks Memorial Hospital, Abilene, TX.
H.S. was preceded in death by his parents and his ten (10) brothers and sisters: Brother, Carl Calahan and wife Wilma; Sister, Oma Cummings and husband Zach; Sister, Myriam McLeod and husband Elster; Brother, Jack Calahan and wife Neva; Sister, Doris Casey and husband Hilburn; Sister, Nell Brown and husband Arthur; Sister, Ora Brown and husband Frank; Sister, Nina Upton and husband Raymond; Sister, Helen Karr and husband Bryan; Brother, Shelby Calahan and wife Margaret; also numerous nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife June Foster Calahan. Daughters, Dian Bentley and husband Ron and their 3 children and spouses, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; Rose Cathy Baker and her 3 children and their spouses and 5 grandchildren; Vicky Stark and husband Gara and their 3 children and spouses and 3 grandchildren; Son, Barry Calahan and wife Sandra and their 3 children and spouses and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 2:00 PM at South Plains Baptist Church, Floyd County, TX. Burial will follow in Memorial Park, Floydada, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Harkey Funeral Home, Monahans, TX.
