Josie Calzada Hernandez, beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt passed away on Monday, January 25, 2021 at her home in Monahans. Josie was born in Sanderson to Antonio Calzada Sr and Edelmira Coronado Calzada on July 15, 1950. She resided in Sanderson throughout her childhood and attended Sanderson High School.
On February 12, 1984, Josie married the love of her life, Richard Hernandez. After leaving Del Rio, they settled in Monahans, TX. Having been a hard worker all of her life, Josie continued to provide for her family by working at multiple jobs. Prior to her death, she was self employed with Josie’s Income Tax Service, was the Administrator of Care Etc. Home Care and had just retired as the Office Manager of JORN Well Service, LLC.
Josie was a member of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist Catholic Church. She also served as a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She ran the concession stand for the Monahans Soccer League for many years and was known as “Grandma Burritos”.
Josie loved traveling with her family. Her favorite destination was to Las Vegas where she enjoyed playing the slot machines. She also enjoyed supporting her grandchildren in the various sports they played. When attending games, her cheers were sure to be the loudest. Spoiling her grandkids was another of her favorite past times. They knew that if Mom and Dad said no, Grandma would say yes.
Josie is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hernandez, her father, Antonio Calzada Sr, her brother Antonio Calzada Jr, her grandchildren, Melissa Ann Cruz, Chassidy Lilani Ramirez and James Roger Cruz.
Josie is survived by her mother, Edelmira Calzada of Sanderson, her sister, Yolanda Connelly of Sanderson, children, Carlos Ruben Cruz of Odessa, Carlos Ricardo Cruz of Monahans, Beatriz Elizabeth Cruz of Monahans, Anna Maria Romo-Salazar of Monahans, Alejandro Romo Jr. of Odessa, John Andrew Romo of Monahans and Amanda Ann Cruz of Monahans. Surviving grandchildren include Carlos Ruben Cruz Jr., Anthony Cruz, John Michael Adauto, Angela Renee Adauto, Ashley Nicole Adauto, Victoria Nikole Salazar, Delena Gabriella Truex, Damion Kane Franco Romo, Ysolina Raylyn Franco Romo, Analyn Fe Franco Romo, Alejandro Odessa Franco Romo, Arissa Maria Romo, Jessamy Amarissa Ramirez, Karizma Cruz Ramirez, Guillermo Ramirez Jr. and Milani Sofia Ramirez. She is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held on Wednesday January 27 at 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Harkey’s Funeral Home. Rosary will follow at 6:00 pm at St John’s Catholic Church in Monahans. There will be a short viewing on Thursday January 28 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Harkey’s Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am at St. John’s Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Monahans Memorial Cemetery.
Pall Bearers will be Carlos Ruben Cruz, Carlos Ricardo Cruz, Jeremy Calzada, Victor Calzada, Bud Navarrette, Damion Franco Romo, Bryant Franco and Carlos Ruben Cruz Jr
The family would like to thank everyone that has expressed their condolences, brought food for the family and special thanks to Father Allen Olouch, Harkey Funeral Home, and Lisa from Home Hospice of Odessa.
