Laverne was very involved at the First Baptist Church in Monahans where she attended for many years. She was admired by young and old alike for her "card ministry;" sending daily birthday, anniversary, get well, sympathy, and the simple words of encouragement that always seemed to come at the right time.
Laverne was very involved in her women's study club, Tau Lambda, that provides scholarships for high school students, and various civic activities.
In 1993, Laverne was honored by the Chamber of Commerce with the Merit Award for her outstanding citizenship.
