Lois Grant

Melwyn Lois Grant passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2019, in Odessa, TX. A family gathering to greet friends will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday, April 15, 2019, at Harkey Funeral Home. Celebration Memorial services will be 11 am on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Chris Powell officiating.

Melwyn Lois (Cheek) Grant was born April 7, 1932, in Jackson, Missouri. Moving to Monahans at the age of 10, Lois attended school in Monahans through her graduation in 1950. While in high school; Lois met her lifetime sweetheart, Jack Grant. The couple married on June 11, 1950. With the exception of ten months, Lois and Jack lived in Monahans their entire married life.

Lois attended Sul Ross State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972 and a Master of Education in 1976. She served as an elementary teacher in the Monahans School District for 21 years, retiring in 1993. She continued as a substitute in the district until 2010.

Lois was very involved in Monahans First Baptist Church. Joining the church at the age of 10, she was a lifetime member of 77 years. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, a Women's Missionary Union (WMU) member, and on various committees. In addition, Lois was a member of the Nu Gamma Study Club, the Wednesday Study Club, the Tau Lambda Study Club, and the local Retired Teachers Association. She also enjoyed the Red Hats Society, the Monahans Garden Club, and the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce. Friends of the Monahans Sandhills State Park were dear to her heart.

Lois joined her husband in helping build the First Baptist Church dorm at Paisano Baptist Encampment. Because of their hard work and dedication, the church honored them by naming the building the Jack and Lois Grant Lodge in 2010. General Encampment at Paisano was one of Lois's favorite times of the year.

Lois also enjoyed traveling with Jack, family, and friends all over the globe. Her favorite place to visit was Hawaii. Her favorite vacation spot was at her cabin in Ruidoso, NM. She enjoyed playing games with family and friends, some of her favorite nights were spent with the 42 Club as well as playing Skip-Bo and Yahtzee with her grandkids.

In Monahans, Lois is known for her kindness, generosity, Christian spirit, and sweet disposition.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Ada Cheek, her beloved husband, Jack Grant, whom she was married to for 61 years. Her brothers, Gerald and William Joseph (Bill) Cheek, her sister, Evelyn D'Orsay, and two sons, Jackie Ray and Jerry Wayne Grant.

She is survived by her son, George William (Bill) Grant and wife Linda, and her daughter, Melwyn Sheree Sims and husband Danny. Lois was Memaw to grandchildren Christopher Sims, Brandon Sims (Erika), Zachary Wolfe, Aaron Wolfe, Jordan Robbins (Jacob), William Grant. Great grandchildren; Jules, Alyssa, Hutson, Bradon, Isla, Wiley, and John, along with numerous nephews and nieces.
