Juanita Pigmon, better known to family and friends as “Nita,” passed away on February 7, 2023 at Hendricks Hospital in Abilene. She was born to Walter Lee and Ollie Mendenhall in Wichita Falls, Texas on March 24, 1929. Nita Married Rex Pigmon on December 9, 1950, Monahans, moved to the ranch in 1954 and never left. Nita was a lifelong rancher’s wife and maintained a positive attitude during droughts and hard times as well as good times. She never complained about having to sometimes do family things alone because she knew the cows came first.
Nita is survived by one daughter, Vicki of Kermit; a granddaughter, Bonnie of Odessa; and the apple of her eye, a great grandson, Rhys, also of Odessa. She is also survived by several close family members including Jerry Vest, Ty and Samann Watkins all of Monahans; nieces, Belinda Milligan, and husband, John of Lewisville; Rexann Holland of San Angelo, Carolyn Redwine, and husband, Terry of Colorado City, Marily Meader of Stephenville, Carolyn Eades of Hobbs, New Mexico; her longtime and special caregiver, Lorena Resendez; and a host of lifelong friends and extended family. Nita is preceded in death by her mother and father, the love of her life Rex and her youngest daughter Lisa.
Nita was very civic and church minded. She was a founding member of the Million Barrel Museum in Monahans and served on the board until it was turned over to the county. She was also a longtime member of the Medallion Home Hostesses and Historical Committee in Kermit. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church first in Monahans and later in Kermit. She taught children’s classes at First Baptist in Monahans for years. When she moved her membership to Kermit she served that church through work in Vacation Bible School and the bereavement committee and children’s choir. Nita was a dedicated supporter of everything her children, granddaughter, and great grandson did and was involved in. Nita never met a stranger, and her family stories and laughter will be missed by everyone she touched.
