Mary Catherene Lewis

November 11, 1941 — October 7, 2024

Pyote, Texas

Mary Catherene Lewis was born on November 11, 1941, in Carlsbad, NM. She spent her childhood in Dell City, Texas, where she met her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Gerald Lewis. They were married in El Paso, Texas on March 14, 1960, and spent their early years together in Dell City dedicated to ranching and raising cattle and ranch horses.

Mary and Gerald welcomed their daughter, Leeta and son Marty before moving to Pecos, Texas in 1968. Eight years later, they welcomed their youngest son, Casey, and their family was complete. Mary was a respected careerwoman in Pecos for many years and then worked alongside her husband at Davison Feed Pens and Pecos Beef, where they became well known and very respected in the cattle feeder industry. They were blessed with 43 beautiful years of marriage and left a true legacy of love, with their grandchildren being their most cherished accomplishment.

Sewing was one of her greatest passions, where she made the most beautiful quilts, blankets, clothes, bags, and endless gifts of love for everyone she kept dear to her heart. The possibilities of creativity were always endless in her incredible room full of her collection of sewing machines, endless supply of fabric, thread and yarn. If she intended to make a quilt or blanket for you, you were one of the many that were on her long waiting list. When your turn came around, rest assured you have never been warmed by anything so beautifully and preciously made. Everything she crafted was made entirely out of love and her talent as a remarkable seamstress was truly a labor of love.

Alongside her many talents, Mary loved to hunt and could outshoot any of the men. Her love for her family was only rivaled by her love for her dachshund, Leonard, who she kept by her side every day for over 13 years. She loved keeping her yard beautiful and always kept a thriving garden, feeding her family what they looked forward to the most, her cooking.

Mary, but best known as “Nanan,” by not only her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, but many others she loved so dearly. A proud and true supporting member of the Wildcat Nation, she followed her grandchildren, and later her great-grandchildren, in their sports and accomplishments anywhere she could. Her love was so beautifully expressed through her support and felt deeply by all blessed enough to be recipients. Nanan was the biggest fan you could ever hope to have cheer you on.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 10:30am Friday, October 11th in Monahans at the Harkey Funeral Home Chapel. A burial will follow on Saturday in Dell City, Texas at the Cienaga Cemetary at 11:00 Texas time.
