Myrtis Howorth

April 17, 1915 — January 4, 2016

Myrtis Christine Howorth, 100, formerly of Wickett, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2016 at the Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Facility in San Angelo following a brief illness, three months short of her 101st birthday.

Myrtis was born April 17, 1915 on a farm near Homewood, Mississippi. ‘Myrt', as she was lovingly nicknamed, grew up as the eighth of ten children born to Johnny and Etta Brown.

Myrt married her loving husband, Jake Howorth, in 1931 and they were blessed with four children (Betty Fay, Johnny, Jerry and Max), four grandchildren (Martina, Sheila, Chris and Paige) and three great grandchildren (Taylor, Landon and Rex). She and Jake followed the oil business, moving from Mississippi, with stops in Arkansas and Louisiana before landing in Wickett, Texas in 1939. Altogether, she and Jake spent 57 wonderful years together until he passed away in 1988.

Myrt was blessed to find love again, marrying Laird Reeves in 1992. Their life together was spent splitting time between Laird's farm in Wisconsin and her home in Wickett. In 2008, Myrt and Laird moved to the Baptist Retirement Community in San Angelo; she and Laird spent 21 years together until he passed away in 2013.

In April of 2015, Myrt celebrated her 100th birthday with a big party attended by over 70 family members and friends and the Mayor of San Angelo, Dwain Morrison, presented her with a Proclamation recognizing her long and fruitful life.

Myrt devoted her life to being a good wife, mother and Christian, always putting her faith and family first and making time for her many friends. She was a person of immense attraction to all, with her beautiful smile and kind words and, yes - sharp wit that always made us laugh. She will be missed. She will always be loved.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wickett United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 222, Wickett, TX 79788, or Buckner Foundation (Sagecrest), 700 N. Pearl St., Ste 1200, Dallas, TX 75201.

The family will receive friends for visitation Friday, January 8, 2016 from 9 - 11 AM at Harkey Funeral Home. Graveside services will begin at 11 AM at Monahans Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Beth Harrington officiating.
