Wayne Pounds

November 13, 1960 — January 25, 2019

Wayne Lawrence Pounds, 58, reached his final finish line earlier than planned on January 25, 2019, in Monahans, Texas. Wayne was born on November 13, 1960 in San Fernando, Trinidad. In 1970, his family moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana, to ensure their children had access to the best education and future possible. Having lost his father at an early age, Wayne always knew how important it was to live his life to the fullest. Wayne completed his education at Pearsall High School and promptly began his career roughnecking in the East Texas Oilfields. Wayne took advantage of his thrill-seeking spirit and survived the bust of the 1980s by opening his own business, which found him changing lights in the highest radio towers in the area. Soon thereafter, he moved to west Texas and began working for Monahans Nipple Up, where he where he worked with his long-time partner-in-crime, Dana Harris, and began to cement his place as a force to be reckoned with in the West Texas oilscape. On March 30, 1996, he finally met his best friend for life (BFFL, if you will), his daughter Karley Renee Pounds. From the beginning, he delighted in showing her the finer things in life, from the best way to bait a hook, to the grip needed to add five yards to her drive. As she grew (taller and taller), he followed her golf and volleyball pursuits, visiting gymnasiums everywhere between the deserted streets of Presidio, Texas to the hills of North Carolina. One of Karley's favorite stories is the time he came to her Lady Lobo volleyball game in a borrowed truck, only admitting when she saw the blood on his shirt after the game that he had totaled his truck on the way there. She never had to doubt his love and dedication to her, and he made sure she knew that. He taught her to work hard, to love hard, and to just be thankful for their time together. Each Valentine's Day, he sent her a dozen red roses, and reminded her that boys were the devil, but she deserved the best if and when she decided on one. Through their shared passions and respect for each other, they truly developed a relationship that we each should strive to emulate. Each 'shake and bake' handshake reminded them that no matter where they were and what they were doing, the other was always thinking about and loving them. That is a blessed memory that Karley will continue to carry through the rest of her life. He will continue to be present for her, in every action and thought, from here on out. Wayne was blessed to always find family in his friends, and was at the helm of numerous different friendship groups. He and Karley spent their holidays in Houston or with the Harris family in Monahans. He loved hunting, fishing, racing, and golf, although with a drive like his, he often found it difficult to procure consistent golf partners. He proudly hosted Wednesday night prayer group at his shop, where he partook in community discussion and kept in shape with 12 ounce curls. He was an active member of the NRA, the IRHA (International Hot Rod Association), the 943, and last but not least, the Eva Street Outlaws with his friend and business partner Coy Wall. Wayne Lawrence Pounds is survived by his mother, Jacqueline Maingot, and her husband, Jack, of Houston; his brother Robert Pounds, and his wife Vicki, of Dallas; his sister Kathy Pounds, of Houson; his daughter, Karley Pounds, of Monahans, and her mother, Shawna Hammons, of Wellington, Colorado; and his brother-by-choice Dana Harris, and his wife Connie, of Monahans. He is preceded in death by his father, Steve Robert Pounds. Wayne will also be fondly remembered by his nephews, Robbie and Wade Pounds, as well as Angie Fuentes, her husband Randy and children Hadlie and Caden; Kalie Crumrine and her husband Jordan and son Briggs; and Chad and Tanner Harris, nephews, Dakotah Kinney and Hartley Mosley, and their mother, Sheila Sandell. A funeral service in memory of Wayne will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Southside Baptist Church in Monahans, with Joshua Rieff officiating. Interment will follow at the family plot in Penwell, Texas. Visit our website harkeyfunerals.com to sign the guestbook or leave a personal note for the family.
